• Apophysitis is inflammation of the growth plate in the back of the heel. The growth plate is responsible for the growth of the heel bone.
  • Calcaneal Apophysitis can be caused by stress, trauma, and/or tight Achilles tendon and posterior muscle group. The condition frequently occurs in children active in sports.
  • Injury to the heel growth plate can interfere with growth.
  • Treatment is rest and avoidance of stress. Sports activity should be reduced or stopped. Immobilization is appropriate in severe cases. Well cushioned sneakers, gel heel cushions, and ice application should be used immediately.
  • Healing can take two to three months.
  • Orthotics were recommended to improve function during walking and reduce stress.
