3 Tips to Prevent Fungal Toenail Infections

A fungal toenail infection often starts as a spot on the nail but can quickly escalate into a bigger problem if not treated early. The fungus infects the skin underneath the toenail and then grows from there. The condition causes the toenails to become slightly thicker, more brittle, and discolored. The infection can spread on to other toenails if it’s left to fester for too long.

The infection can take several months to develop before signs of serious symptoms appear. The fungus can be very difficult to treat because medication does not get through the nail in substantial amounts. Different types of treatments are available and can vary from over-the-counter products to laser therapy. Here at our office, we offer PinPointe Laser Surgery Treatments to help get rid of your fungal nail issues.

Prevention is key! Here are three tips to help you avoid getting a fungal toenail infection:

  • Keep your feet clean and dry: Fungus loves warm, dark, and moist conditions. Wash your feet daily and dry them thoroughly, especially between the toes. Avoid walking in wet, sweaty socks. Don’t wear the same shoes two days in a row. Rotate your shoe collection; it gives the shoes enough time to dry out completely.
  • Trim your nails: A proper toenail cutting technique is paramount. Cut your toenails straight across and never too short to avoid an ingrown toenail and infection.
  • Protect your feet: Avoid going barefoot in public areas. It’s best to wear shower shoes or flip-flops when you are out at the beach, locker rooms, communal showers, and public pools.

If you are concerned about how your toenails look or you think you have symptoms of fungal toenails, it is important to see your foot doctor and receive the proper diagnosis and treatment.
