4 Winter Foot Care Tips

Winter comes with its own set of unique challenges, especially when it comes to your body and health. At Westchester Podiatric Healing Medicine, P.C., we know how important it is to take those extra foot care steps to avoid serious winter foot problems. That’s why we have put together a list of our top foot care tips, which will keep your feet feel happy and healthy during the winter months.

  • Keep your feet warm and dry – Cold and wet feet can develop from poor circulation, prolonged exposure to the harsh winter elements, and foot perspiration. Wear moisture-wicking socks and proper winter shoes or boots to keep your feet clean and dry. Switch to a new pair of shoes and socks if you find your feet damp and sweaty.
  • Wear safe winter shoes – The change of season requires shoes to have the right amount of support, particularly for those who transitioned into winter boots. Your flip-flops, sandals, and high heels won’t serve your feet well. Wear proper snow boots that are made with waterproof materials, have added cushioning, excellent traction, and good arch support to protect your feet from potential hazards like slips, falls, sprains, and fractures.
  • Ensure proper fit – The right fitted shoes or boots will help support your feet and ankle and avoid painful problems such as blisters, ingrown toenails, bunions, corns, calluses, and more.
  • Moisturize your feet – Your feet can suffer during the cold winter months. It can cause severe dry and cracked skin, especially around the feet and heels. Keep the skin supple and well hydrated by applying a moisturizer or cream all around the areas of your feet.

Inspect your feet daily for any cuts, injuries, infections, or any other abnormality. As the temperature starts to drop, it’s essential to pay more attention to your feet. Get help from a podiatrist for diagnosis and treatment of your podiatric problems this winter.
