5 Steps for Preventing Falls in Older Adults

Anyone who has experienced an injury because of a fall knows how serious it can be, especially for the elderly. Falls are a serious threat to the health and safety of seniors. It’s the leading cause of injury and death in older Americans age 65 and older. Falls can impede your mobility and independence. Maintaining healthy feet in can significantly reduce the risk of falling.

September is National Falls Prevention Month and our expert Dr. John C. Marzano of Westchester Podiatric Healing Medicine, P.C., would like you to take simple steps to ensure that you and your loved ones are safe from falls.

OUR TOP FIVE STEPS FOR PREVENTING FALLS:

  • Address foot pain and mobility issues – Do your feet hurt? Are you unsteady on your feet? Foot pain can alter your balance and cause you to fall as you try to change your walk to avoid the pain. Get your pains, aches, and symptoms examined promptly. A podiatrist can help diagnose and treat foot problems that cause pain and affect your gait and balance. Your podiatrist may recommend orthotics or supportive shoes as a part of a fall risk prevention plan.
  • Fall-proof your home – Most falls happen at home. One of the best ways to lower your risk of falling is to light up your living space. Clear any clutter or obstructions from high-traffic areas. Secure electrical cord, phone cables and carpets firmly to the floor. Repair any loose boards and make sure to clean up any spilled liquid or grease from the floor. Adding handrails for the stairways and bathrooms can also improve safety for seniors.
  • Check your eyesight – Make sure you have a healthy vision and update prescription eyewear. A simple eye exam from an optometrist can help lower the risk of falls in the elderly.
  • Wear the right shoes – Have your foot measured by a professional every time you shop for new shoes. Seniors should avoid wearing high heels and floppy slippers and opt for non-skid, rubber soles shoes.
  • Stay in shape – Engaging in regular exercise improves strength, balance, and flexibility, thus reducing the risk of falls.
