Foot Fungus

If you’ve ever showered barefoot at the gym or walked through a locker room or poolside without socks or shoes, you may have been exposed to foot fungus. At the office of Westchester Podiatric Healing Medicine, P.C., we can answer your questions and tell you the best way to get rid of a fungal infection.

Fortunately, although persistent and irritating, foot fungus is usually harmless. However, the tricky part is that it can be easy to catch yet difficult to get rid of a fungal infection. The first step is to determine if you have one. The most common types of foot fungus are athlete’s foot and toenail fungus. These are very easily transmittable because the foot provides a moist, soft area, which is a perfect environment for fungus to grow. Foot fungus is very contagious. You can get it just by coming into contact with a contaminated area.

The best way to avoid an infection, is to practice good foot hygiene and take the necessary precautions to avoid contamination. To do this, keep your toenails short and well trimmed; don’t wear sweaty socks for prolonged periods of time; avoid walking around barefoot in public places; don’t share nail clippers; and wash your feet every day with soap and water.

Signs of Athlete’s Foot

Here are some of the most common symptoms of athlete’s foot:

  • Rash
  • Itchy area near the toes
  • Flaky skin between the toes

Signs of Toenail Fungus

Here are some of the most common symptoms of toenail fungus:

  • Thick or flaky nail
  • Separation between toenail and nail bed

Typically both types of fungal infections can be treated with creams or an oral antifungal treatment. If you notice any of theses signs, it’s important to schedule a consultation with one of our doctors to diagnosis the issue to effectively treat it.
