Happy Feet While Hiking

Spring is in full swing, and there is no better time to take out those hiking boots and enjoy the great outdoors. There are a lot of benefits associated with hiking. It is an excellent cardio workout that can reduce the risk of heart disease, improve blood pressure, boost bone density, strengthen your muscles, improve balance, and manage your weight. Hiking can be tough on your feet though, so be sure to keep these points in mind before your next trek.

  • Proper Footwear: Hiking boots are explicitly meant for hiking and are designed in such a way so that your feet stay protected. Other types of shoes just don’t cut it. Pick boots that offer the best cushion/comfort and provide proper foot and ankle support.
  • Don’t overdo it: Much of last year was spent indoors because of the coronavirus outbreak. That said, do not overdo your first step back to nature. Let your body adjust and move around at a pace that you can maintain for some time rather than rushing yourself and risking an injury. Let your feet adjust to moving around rocks and uneven surfaces. You can avoid damaging your feet this way and reduce conditions such as stress fractures, calluses, and tendonitis.
  • Keep infections away: Knowing how to keep your feet dry on a hike can help ward off infections and save a trip to the foot doctor. Avoid wet shoes and socks. Keep an extra pair of socks just in case your feet get wet or if you plan on staying outdoors for a prolonged period. Apply foot powder before you set off on a hike to keep your feet dry and protected from annoying blisters and fungal toenail infections.

Hiking can be a lot of fun, provided you are prepared for your journey. Be proactive, wear supportive shoes, keep your feet dry, pack light, and don’t overly stress your feet.
