Laser Treatment for Fungal Toenails

Laser Treatment for Fungal Toenails

A fungal toenail infection or Onychomycosis can be bothersome and persistent. It distorts the shape of the toenail, thickens the nail plate, turns the nail a lackluster yellow and crumbly, is responsible for a foul odor coming from the toenail, and to top it all off; one infected toenail can affect the others. The PinPointe FootLaser is an FDA-approved treatment of fungal toenails. It is a safe, quick, painless, and effective treatment to counter the fungus plaguing toenails.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

The PinPointe FootLaser uses laser light to penetrate the soft skin of the nail bed and zap the area where fungus thrives. The laser light beam kills the fungus and promotes inter-cellular activity and speeds up the healing. The treatment typically takes 30 to 45 mins to complete with multiple sessions. Due to the slow growth of toenails, it can take 6-12 months for a new nail to outgrow the infected one.

HOW EFFECTIVE IS IT?

Laser treatment is a more efficient treatment to cure fungal toenails than oral medications like Terbinafine, which requires prolonged use and can elevate levels of liver enzymes as a side effect. Topical solutions are an effective treatment against toenail fungus, but they need to be administered twice a day for up to a year.

Laser treatment is quick, painless, has no side effects, and often shows results after one treatment. Most often treatment requires three walk-in and walk-out appointments. A patient is required to follow specific protocols at home to prevent the recurrence of a fungal infection. The nail is termed “clear” after the growth of a fresh, clean nail.
