Why Diabetic Foot Wounds Are So Hard to Heal

To understand why diabetic foot wounds matter, we first need to look at the bigger picture.

There is an epidemic of people with diabetes in our country and I'm sure simple observation by everyone can confirm that. More and more people seem to be diagnosed with diabetes.

Statistics show that approximately 25 percent of people diagnosed with type 2 diabetes will come down with an ulceration on their foot or leg during their lifetime.

What is a Diabetic Ulcer

Now to define the word diabetic ulceration or the words I'd like to simply say that when the skin breaks down and the tissues below the skin become exposed we call that a diabetic ulceration.

As you might imagine the danger in this particular condition is that it's a window to the inside of the body for germs pathogens bacteria to enter and damage the tissues of the foot and damage the body as a whole.

These Wounds Are Small But Serious

These kinds of conditions sometimes present as a small lesion or sometimes bigger but they're all equally dangerous. That's the most common cause of limb loss in people with diabetes is the development of ulcerations.

We've Seen It For Decades

So our wound healing center has been in business since 1990 that's 35 years and I was one of the original physicians to start the wound center there.

Final Thoughts

When a person is sick and cannot heal a wound one of the things they need is a jump start. The good news is there are definite new and very promising technologies available today to help these people get better.

The end result is we want them to continue living a normal life. We want them to keep their legs.

If you're interested in what treatments we use to actually get these wounds to close including real examples check out the next post where I talk about something called amnion. It is one of the most exciting things we have in wound care today.
